As a result of Fountain’s decision, Chrysler LLC today named John T.
Auburn Hills, Mich., Jan 29, 2009 -
Chrysler LLC reported continued progress in gaining cost concessions from its key constituents as the Company pursues a global strategic alliance with Fiat S.p.A.

“The Fiat alliance enhances our viability plan, and we’re pleased with the progress of our discussions with Fiat. Meetings with all key constituents regarding concessions are collaborative and productive. These initiatives are totally aligned with our viability plan requirements, and will make Chrysler stronger and more competitive,” said Robert Nardelli, Chairman and CEO of Chrysler.

The potential alliance will benefit Chrysler by preserving jobs and strengthening its viability plan. The alliance would give Chrysler immediate access to substantially all Fiat group vehicle platforms, which would complement Chrysler’s current product lineup with fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly small cars and powertrain technology, saving Chrysler years of development time and billions in costs. Using Fiat’s distribution system, Chrysler would be able to greatly increase the global reach for the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep® brands in markets outside of North America, thereby creating incremental production volume to help fill idle capacity at existing Chrysler manufacturing plants.

Potential benefits of global partnerships and alliances were referenced in Bob Nardelli’s oral and written testimonies before the U.S. House and Senate, and reinforced in public statements over the last several months. This alliance is completely in line with U.S. Treasury’s request for significant restructuring actions, concessions from constituents including employees, the UAW, dealers, suppliers, lenders and Chrysler Financial, development of fuel-efficient vehicles, and long-term overall viability. This alliance is also conditioned on the U.S. government approval of Chrysler’s upcoming viability plan submissions.

Chrysler had previously engaged in discussions that pursued a consolidation partnership with General Motors. After a series of exchanges, GM stated that the option of a consolidation was “off the table.”

As part of Chrysler’s viability plan submitted to Congress, the Company requested a $7 billion bridge loan. After extensive review, U.S. Treasury awarded the Company $4 billion of the $7 billion, with $3 billion to be distributed pending the interim review of Chrysler’s viability plan on Feb. 17, and final review on March 31. It is important to note that no U.S. taxpayer funds would go to Fiat.

Chrysler is working to meet all guidelines as defined by the terms of the loan from the U.S. Treasury and looks forward to presenting its viability plan on Feb. 17.

Chrysler engineers have spent more than 25 years perfecting its award-winning minivan formula and have created more than 65 minivan-first features including a powerful 4.0-liter V-6 engine with six-speed automatic transmission—capable of delivering an EPA fuel efficiency in the city of 17 mpg and 25 mpg on the highway, a label unbeaten among minivans.

A family-friendly interior full of innovation complements fuel-efficient powertrains. Chrysler engineers developed two distinct seating systems: Chrysler’s exclusive Stow ’n Go® seating and storage system and the Swivel ’n Go™ seating systems, both with in-floor storage and an available one-touch power folding third-row seat.

Entertainment options are unmatched by competitors. With music, audio, movie and personalized picture display capability, uconnect tunes anchors the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country’s multimedia, together with a 30-gigabyte hard drive for 6,700 songs, USB port, uconnect studios SIRIUS satellite radio, front-row movie playback (in Park as permitted by state regulations) and an audio jack for any MP3 player audio input playback. The uconnect gps adds even more capability to the uconnect tunes system with navigation and real-time traffic monitoring.

For the rear passengers, a minivan-first dual DVD system can play different media at the same time. With uconnect studios SIRIUS Backseat TV satellite streaming video and SIRIUS Satellite Radio, DVD player and dual A/V jacks with a 115-volt power inverter in the second row, there is something to keep everyone in the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country entertained.

The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country is also first in the minivan segment to feature the new Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path advanced safety systems. The all-new Blind Spot Monitoring System (BSM) detects a possible unseen vehicle when changing lanes. The Rear Cross Path System (RCP) aids the driver any time the vehicle is in reverse and warns if any traffic is moving toward the vehicle. Both systems utilize dual ultra-wideband radar sensors that notify the driver via an audible chime and a visible icon on outside mirrors.

About the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country
The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country offers a contemporary appearance, an EPA fuel efficiency of 25 mpg— a label unbeaten among minivans, three different models, two distinct seating and storage systems, unmatched entertainment systems and more than 40 available safety features. The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country received the U.S. Government’s Five Star crash test rating in both front and side impact tests. The U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country LX is $27,250, which includes $820 destination.

Chrysler Brand
The Chrysler brand has delighted customers with distinctive designs, craftsmanship, intuitive innovation and technology—all at an extraordinary value—since the company was founded in 1926.

Whether it is the groundbreaking, bold design of the Chrysler 300, the sleek elegant styling of a Sebring Convertible, or the “family room on wheels” functionality of the Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler brand vehicles reward the passion, creativity and sense of accomplishment of its owners. Beyond just exceptionally designed vehicles, the Chrysler brand has incorporated thoughtful features into all of its products, such as the Stow ‘n Go seating and storage system on the Chrysler Town & Country, the fuel-saving Multi-Displacement System (MDS) in the Chrysler 300 and uconnect phone utilizing Bluetooth technology on the Chrysler Sebring and Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Both Sebring models also achieve 28 highway mpg fuel economy.

Chrysler celebrated the 25th anniversary of the minivan during the 2009 model year. With more than 65 minivan-firsts introduced since 1983 and more than 12 million Dodge and Chrysler minivans sold, Chrysler LLC has solidified its leadership in the segment. The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country continues to set the mark in minivan value with more than 40 new or improved features from the previous generation, including unsurpassed 17 city / 25 highway mpg fuel economy. The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country is also the first minivan in the segment to feature the all-new Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path advance safety systems.

The Chrysler brand’s succession of innovative product introductions continues to solidify the brand’s standing as the leader in design, engineering and value. The premium for the Chrysler brand is in the product, not the price.

Fuel Economy Improvements for 73 percent of 2009 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep® Models

Auburn Hills, Mich., Oct 31, 2008 - As 2009 model year vehicles arrive in local Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep® showrooms, customers will be pleased to find that fuel economy has increased on 19 of Chrysler LLC’s car, truck and SUV models, representing 73 percent of the entire product lineup. American consumers could see savings of as much as 6.7 million gallons of fuel per year with the 2009 fuel economy improvements.

“Chrysler is committed to improving fuel economy for our customers, and we consistently look at viable technologies to help us achieve that goal,” said Bob Lee, Vice-President – Powertrain Product Team. “With offerings such as our Multi-displacement System (MDS), Active Transfer Case and Front-axle Disconnect, we are able to deliver consumers fuel economy improvements in a majority of our 2009 models.”

In total, six Chrysler brand models (Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Sebring Convertible, Chrysler 300, Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Chrysler Aspen), nine Dodge brand models (Dodge Caliber, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Challenger SRT8, Dodge Charger, Dodge Charger SRT8, Dodge Durango, Dodge Nitro, and Dodge Ram 1500) and four Jeep models (Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Commander) have better fuel economy than their 2008 predecessors.

Best-In-Class
Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles hold numerous best-in-class fuel economy claims for the 2009 model year. The 2009 Dodge Journey offers the best fuel economy in its class with 19 city and 25 highway. The 2009 Jeep Compass 4×4 and Jeep Patriot 4×4 have the best EPA estimated highway fuel economy and are the most fuel efficient four-wheel-drive vehicles in their class. The new 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids deliver best-in-class fuel economy of up to 22 miles per gallon which is an improvement of more than 53 percent in the city and 40 percent overall. The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan offer better highway fuel economy than the leading full-size crossover vehicle and hold an unsurpassed fuel economy for a minivan with 17 city and 25 highway.

Engineering Innovations Make a Difference
For the 2009 model year a more fuel efficient and more powerful version of the renowned 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine has been introduced on various models.

The all-new 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine delivers as much as a five percent improvement in fuel economy – along with more horsepower and torque – courtesy of Variable Valve Timing, expanded four-cylinder mode in the MDS and a host of other technologies. The all-new 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine is available on the 2009 Chrysler Aspen and 300; Dodge Challenger, Charger, Durango, Ram 1500 and Ram 2500 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander.

New technologies on the 2009 Chrysler 300 and the 2009 Dodge Charger include Active Transfer Case and Front Axle Disconnect. Chrysler is the only manufacturer to pair these two technologies on the same vehicle. Chrysler’s system seamlessly transitions between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with no driver intervention by disconnecting the front wheels from the drivetrain to reduce friction and rotational inertia. The system provides optimal traction, performance and safety, as well as a fuel economy improvement of one mpg (combined city/highway).

Chrysler Models
Chrysler brand vehicles achieving improved fuel economy include the Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler Sebring Sedan, Chrysler Sebring Convertible, Chrysler 300, Chrysler 300 SRT8 and the Chrysler Aspen.

Contemporary design, Range-extended Electric Vehicle drive system and platform for future connectivity

Inspired and soulful look at the new Chrysler DNA

Beauty and brains coalesce in Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle with design and technology appeal

Futuristic in-vehicle connectivity takes center stage

ENVI’s Range-extended Electric Vehicle drive system with 400-mile range

40-mile all-electric range with zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions

The definitive blend of design and technology, the all-new Chrysler 200C EV concept redefines the idea of responsible mobility with a touch of class and sophistication never before embodied so elegantly in one vehicle.

“The Chrysler 200C EV concept represents the perfect blend of provocative design and leading-edge technology, as well as the new Chrysler DNA,” said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President – Product Development, Chrysler LLC. “Chrysler’s latest concept vehicle combines the benefits of progressive, ENVI Range-extended Electric Vehicle technology – which offers nearly zero emissions during daily commutes – with a design that boasts a combination of modern shapes, a planted athletic stance with classic overtones and an undeniably luxurious interior.

“What makes the Chrysler 200C EV concept even more meaningful is the use of technology that will make traveling and managing one’s life an absolute pleasure,” Klegon added. “The 200C EV concept is a connectivity portal to the world outside, creating a rewarding relationship between driver and automobile. The result is a driving experience that celebrates the human instinct to be connected to our world.”

The Chrysler 200C EV concept body was designed to manage aerodynamic forces while delivering a stunning form.

On the inside, the 200C EV continues the theme of embracing the future with a highly sculpted and richly appointed environment. The interior is free of switches and levers. All vehicle functions, settings and uconnect features are managed via a panoramic multimedia touch screen, a passenger-dedicated “techno-leaf” and a stowable tablet PC.

Based on a shortened version of Chrysler’s successful rear-wheel-drive platform, the Chrysler 200C EV is a performance sedan in a package that looks spirited and agile. It delivers a blend of style, performance and amenities that both automotive and technology enthusiasts want.

“The Chrysler 200C EV embodies our passion for problem solving by combining the best of engineering and automotive design,” said Ralph Gilles, Vice President – Design. “With the 200C EV, we were able to maximize the effectiveness of the ENVI powertrain with the stunning, wind-cheating vehicle shape, while pushing toward the future with the avant-garde interior and advanced in-vehicle connectivity.

“Designed for the car lover, the Chrysler 200C EV was inspired by Chrysler’s dynamic design legacy, and provides a glimpse at the possibilities for a next-generation Chrysler performance sedan,” Gilles added.

Simple and Elegant Exterior Styling

The Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle evokes timeless beauty, coupling the organic form and language of Chrysler’s deep design roots with the noble proportions of the Chrysler 300 to create a modern product statement that appeals to both luxury and sports car enthusiasts.

“It was important to design a car that not only appealed to the Chrysler enthusiast, but also could sway the interest of a wide variety of potential customers,” said Nick Malachowski, Chrysler 200C EV Lead Exterior Designer. “The essence of the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle is sophisticated and fresh. It embraces a more organic design philosophy and helps to push the Chrysler brand design to the next level.”

Efficiency is a key element in the design of the Chrysler 200C EV, as its swept-back front end contributes to the vehicle’s aerodynamics. The front fascia is a modern interpretation of the winged Chrysler badge, and its distinct grille continues to shape and evolve Chrysler’s brand identity. The encompassed grille bars within the front fascia reinforce the sinuous elegance of the 200C EV concept vehicle with its assertive shape and precise execution.

The headlamps and taillamps are treated as dramatic sculptural elements on the vehicle and reinforce the organic form and function carried throughout the design theme. Their placement on the far corners of the vehicle help to visually reduce the front and rear overhangs and contribute to the vehicle’s efficient appearance. The lower frontal fog lights and rear backup lights are seamlessly integrated onto the surrounding fascia, and are minimized in scale through the use of LED technology. Modern graphic cues, such as the use of a dissipating dot matrix, are utilized throughout the concept vehicle as both functional and visual elements.

The Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle projects a confident stance and proportion with its optimized wheel-to-body relationship. The clean body-side and restrained line work communicate an elegance achieved only when the “less is more” rule of modern design is followed. Simple, modern details such as aerodynamic mirrors and door handles continue the marriage of form and function.

The eco-friendly, water-based Liquid Graphite Pearl exterior color of the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle is a luminous, dark gray, which conveys a serious and sophisticated attitude. The windows are tinted in a Warm Bronze, helping to reduce air-conditioning loads. They are surrounded in hand-crafted polished aluminum accent trim.

Comfort and Connectivity Define Interior Space

Maximizing interior comfort, utilizing space and creating a connected environment were key objectives in creating the interior of the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle. Natural, luxurious, organic materials and modern furniture design served as inspiration for the interior design team.

In contrast to the exterior color, the interior space is light and inviting. On the inside, Leaf Green LED lighting and stitching accentuates the organic, clean shape. A combination of Pearl, Graphite and Leaf Green colors combine to create a warm and inviting interior cabin.

“The interior space of the 200C EV concept vehicle is defined by a modern, sculptural form and language that doesn’t sacrifice an open and spacious feel,” said Ryan Patrick Joyce, Chrysler 200C EV Lead Interior Designer. “If occupants are given the choice to take the short or long route home, I want the interior to inspire them to choose the long way.”

Immediately noticeable upon entry is the large screen located on the instrument panel. Starting the vehicle activates the electronic instrument panel that contains an advanced electronic vehicle information center, the next generation of Chrysler’s uconnect infotainment system and a compound touch surface.

The compound touch surface is a touch screen that serves as the hub for the vehicle’s connectivity system – a system that offers endless avenues of communication and transforms the interior into a portal to the outside world. It can be personalized to suit different drivers or simplified based on preference. Similar to recently introduced touch-screen electronic devices, the driver is able to move images, select infotainment choices and customize images, backgrounds, mood, volume and lighting by simply touching the screen itself.

The emphasis on open space is a hallmark of Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle. An aluminum appliqué dramatically sweeps from the center console, across the instrument panel and onto the passenger’s door. The first-row compartment strays from traditional 50/50 seating and has been cleverly designed to give the perception of a more spacious 60/60 seating space. The driver and passenger seats, thin in design with a focus on spinal support, are covered in Pearl chromium-free leather and trimmed with Leaf Green stitching, giving the interior a sporty and luxurious look. All four bucket seats can be heated or cooled with individual temperature controls.

The first-row passenger has access to a techno-leaf that houses personal climate controls and an infotainment system. A simple touch to the smooth glass surface deploys a personal touch screen computer from the glove box. Users can surf the Internet, scroll through their personal media library, schedule vehicle maintenance or send directions to the driver. The compartment located below the techno-leaf is a charging station for personal mobile devices. Electronic devices can be charged by simply laying the unit on the charging pad. Rear passengers have access to a similar charging compartment under the cantilevered front-console arm rest.

The thick-rimmed, one-spoke steering wheel is trimmed in two types of leather. The top of the steering wheel is wrapped in Pearl leather and the lower is covered in Graphite leather accented with Leaf Green perforations. The steering column and stalks are milled from aluminum for a precise, technical feel. Drivers can move the transmission into drive positions via the right stalk. The horn pad is draped in Pearl leather with Leaf Green stitching and is dramatically swept back and emboldened with the Chrysler winged badge.

Climate control for the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle can be utilized indirectly or directly. Indirectly, air flows through the cabin via a metal-mesh outlet located near the windshield. Air can be pointed onto occupants through an illuminated metal-mesh bezel that surrounds the driver screen and passenger outboard vents.

Interior doors on the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle are two-tone. The top-half of the door is trimmed in Pearl leather with Leaf Green stitching and polished aluminum accents; the lower-half is an extension of the flooring.

The concept vehicle flooring is inspired by a Zen rock garden. Gentle Graphite waves flow from the floor, across the sides of the center console and undulate onto the doors. Removable carpeted floor mats are practical and sustainable as they are composed of recycled nylon.

Additional storage can be found in the trunk of the vehicle, which contains a load floor made from recycled leather.

Advance Interior Design Studio

The interior of the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle was created in Chrysler LLC’s Advance Interior Design Studio. The primary goal of this studio is to improve the quality and fit and finish on all future Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep® vehicles. By using state-of-the-art design software and computer modeling processes, interior designers can achieve quality and fit and finish objectives faster than ever before. Implementation of the Advance Interior Design Studio has enabled the company to engage suppliers up to a year earlier, allowing more time for customer research, feature approval and material selection. The Advance Interior Design Studio features a dedicated, customer-focused, interior-centric team of designers and engineers.

ENVI Range-extended Electric Vehicle Technology: The Chrysler 200C EV concept is the newest Chrysler ENVI electric-drive vehicle.

Utilizing ENVI’s Range-extended Electric Vehicle technology, the Chrysler 200C EV concept boasts clean, quiet elegance and seamless acceleration, underscoring the engaging driving experience of the Chrysler brand.

Capable of driving up to 40 miles on battery-only power – using zero gasoline and producing zero tailpipe emissions – the 200C EV uses a small gasoline engine and integrated electric generator that produces electricity to extend the driving range to 400 miles.

PRESS RELEASE

Chrysler 200C EV Concept: Platform for future Chrysler Connectivity Features

“uconnect future” to let consumers combine on-line and on-road worlds

• Convenience: new levels of connecting the vehicle to the home and digital lifestyle
• Socialization: in-car social media capability to create “buddy vehicles” with technology similar to MySpace, Facebook and Twitter
• Synchronization: consumers can keep schedules, music, friends and life in synch, even when in their vehicle

The passion for state-of-the-art, transformational vehicle connectivity continues at Chrysler LLC, as demonstrated in the all-new Chrysler 200C EV concept. Delivering unprecedented connectivity in the areas of convenience, socialization and synchronization, the Chrysler 200C EV connects consumers’ on-line and on-road environments in state-of-the-art fashion as consumers begin to treat their vehicles as their second home.

“Chrysler is already offering a wide and diverse portfolio of connectivity and infotainment features under its popular uconnect umbrella,” said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President – Product Development, Chrysler LLC. “The 200C EV concept demonstrates Chrysler’s ‘uconnect future’ – a host of unique, trend-setting innovations that will ultimately provide unprecedented convenience to consumers.”

The Chrysler 200C EV concept’s advanced connectivity features focus on three primary areas: convenience, socialization and synchronization.

Convenience

Personalized profile

Chrysler’s advanced connectivity system welcomes the driver, and operator-specific options display on-screen settings.

Settings include radio with audio tagging – allowing occupants to purchase music by clicking on the Mopar icon. Access to Internet radio, stored MP3s, seating position and temperature, are also featured.

Additionally, a “teen setting” can be placed on the vehicle to limit speed and warn the owner if the vehicle is being driven erratically or out of a specific range from home.

Navigation upgrade

A next-generation navigation system features a link to city-street cameras, allowing vehicle occupants to view traffic situations in specific intersections, roadways and airport security terminals in real-time.

Much like an aircraft navigation system, real-time weather data is available to the driver.

Additionally, this advanced system can anticipate fuel efficient routes and provide route recommendations to the driver.

Socialization

Vehicle networking

Using a format similar to existing web sites such as Facebook and Twitter, other vehicles can be added to Chrysler’s system which links “buddy” vehicles. Among other capabilities, this feature can show vehicle locations of friends, share directions and music, and provide “instant messaging” capabilities. Drivers can also create their own vehicle networking systems.

Passenger PC

Hidden in the dashboard is a personal computer that neatly slides out for front-seat passenger use. This computer gives the front-seat passenger the ability to use the Internet, access the navigation system, run vehicle diagnostics and read the owner’s manual, among other capabilities. All Internet features are available, from video conferencing to checking restaurant reviews and making dinner reservations on Zagat’s from the vehicle. The personal computer can be passed from the front-seat passenger to passengers in the rear.

Synchronization

Home/office link

If there’s anyone out there who’s qualified to opine on what it takes to turn around a struggling automaker, it’s Lee Iacocca. Those old enough to remember life in the late ’70s can recall Iacocca’s first stint at the head of Chrysler, way before the automaker was ever purchased by Daimler and its subsequent sale to Cerberus. The situation in which the beleaguered automakers currently find themselves bears a striking similarity to that of Chrysler’s in 1979, except that Chrysler was the only one of the Big 3 that needed Federal help back then and the total loan offered to Chrysler was just $1.5 billion.

Today Lee Iacocaa has finally offered his take on what should happen to Detroit’s current execs. “Having been there, I do not agree with the sentiment now coming out of Congress that the management should be changed as a condition of granting loans to the Detroit automakers. You don’t change coaches in the middle of a game, especially when things are so volatile.” He adds, “They’re by far the best shot we have for success.”

To many, Iacocca is the man most responsible for righting the ship at Chrysler back in the early ’80s, creating the venerable K-car and fast-tracking the first minivan, so his opinions should carry a bit more weight than others. But is he right?

Manley cites economic troubles in both the U.S. and China as the main reason the two have decided to go their separate ways.
Congress will likely vote this week in favor of giving Detroit automakers at least $15 billion in federal loans, but that healthy chunk of change will come with many strings attached. Several Congressmen have insisted that more concessions come from the UAW, lenders and executives before a cent is sent to Detroit. Another stipulation is a special “Car Czar” to watch over the money and make sure it is being spent wisely. Several congressional officials have mentioned September 11 fund master Kenneth Feinberg as a candidate to keep the automakers in line. Feinberg, who is also an accomplished lawyer, oversaw over $500 million in donations following the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. A key element of being “Car Czar” would be wielding the authority to take all the funding back if he determines it’s been used improperly.

The House of Representatives and the Senate will discuss and likely vote on the Automaker Bailout Bill (we know, it’s not technically a bailout, but rather loans that will be paid back) tomorrow, and the first discussion draft of the bill has hit the internet. The discussion bill is 31 pages long, and like you we’re not about to spend our Monday evening reading through the whole thing. Thankfully, some real auto journalists over at The Detroit Free Press have done that for us.

They report that the bill contains provisions for a federal official, or “Car Czar” as the position will no doubt be referred to, who would oversee distribution of the funds and have authority to yank them back if an automaker is deemed to be using them ineffectively. The bill also requires automakers to submit another restructuring plan by March 31, 2009, after which the Car Czar could use his or her powers to reopen negotiations with the company, its creditors and the United Auto Workers union.

Part of the bill also stipulates that if the Detroit 3 accepts these loans, they must promise to stop pursuing litigation aimed at striking down California’s right to set its own emissions standards and other states’ right to adopt them. The California Air Resources Board has created emissions standards the are generally more strict than federal standards, and so far 17 states have chosen to adopt the Golden State’s measures.

Detroit is backed into a corner, however, and will likely accept any conditions that Congress attaches to the bailout bill. With that in mind, Democratic leaders in Congress and the White House say that approval for the bill is likely, which would see around $15 billion in federal loans granted to the Detroit 3 as soon as December 15th.

STUDY: Detroit bankruptcy would cost four times more than bailout

The choices are: spend $15 billion in bridge loans now to keep the Detroit Two (GM and Chrysler, since Ford can apparently hold its own) from going bankrupt, or spend $70 billion over the next two years to pay for the fallout from the Detroit Two going bankrupt.

Those are the numbers according to the Anderson Economic Group and BKK, which get to their $70 million number based on 1.8 million job losses and evaporating federal and state tax revenue. And that number still doesn’t include things like the jolts to credit markets, consumer confidence and manufacturing and supplier bases, among other nuclear scenarios. The question now is: how are the two (or three) automakers going to divvy up the $15 billion and just how many strings will Congress attach?

Highlights of Chrysler LLC Plan Submitted Today to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and the House Committee on Financial Services

Chairman and CEO Robert Nardelli looks forward to testifying before the committees later this week

Chrysler will urge the immediate adoption of legislation that will allow domestic automakers to weather the current national economic crisis and continue to invest in industry-leading products, technologies and vehicles of the future

Washington, D.C. , Dec 2, 2008 -

The first question is, what changes has Chrysler made to help itself? Since Chrysler became an independent company in 2007:

We eliminated over 1.2 million units of capacity, or 30 percent;

We reduced fixed costs by $2.4 billion and, separated over 32,000 employees – including 5,000 on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. And at the same time …

We invested in product improvements – over half a billion dollars in our first 60 days

We improved our latest JD Power quality scores, and reduced our warranty claims by 29 percent; Part of our business model transformation includes alliances and partnerships – for example – the agreements to produce vehicles for VW and for Nissan. As a result, through the first six months of the year, Chrysler met or exceeded our operating plan, ending the first half with $9.4 billion unrestricted cash.

Why does Chrysler need the funding? We need to address the unprecedented drop in vehicle sales caused by the financial crisis. U.S. sales are down from a 17 million unit selling rate in early 2007, to an estimated 11 million unit selling rate for the fourth quarter of 2008 – a 38 percent decline. We lost 20 percent of our sales virtually overnight when the financial market crisis forced us out of the consumer lease business. With customers not buying … with dealers not ordering … with our plants not producing … Chrysler’s cash inflow has suffered.

So how will the bridge loan be used? Cash will support ongoing operations as we continue to restructure the business, including in the first quarter alone:

$8.0 billion in payments to parts suppliers $1.2 billion for other vendors

$900 million in wages

$500 million in healthcare and legacy costs

$500 million in capital expenditures

Without an immediate working capital bridge, Chrysler’s liquidity could fall below the level appropriate to ensure operations in the ordinary course by the first quarter of 2009.

So, who is contributing to saving Chrysler? First and foremost, Chrysler and its extended enterprise will. That starts with me. I receive a salary of $1 a year. I have no employment contract, no change of control agreement, no “golden parachute,” and receive no health care or life insurance benefits from the company. We are committed to negotiate concessions from all of our constituents.

The next question - Does Chrysler plan to build cars and trucks that consumers want to buy, and that support the country’s energy security and environmental goals? Our product plan features 24 major launches from 2009 through 2012. For the 2009 model year, 73 percent of our products will offer improved fuel economy compared to 2008 models. We plan on launching additional small, fuel-efficient vehicles. ENVI is our breakthrough family of all-electric … and range - extended electric vehicles – similar to the one parked outside. Chrysler’s product plan includes the introduction of the Ram Hybrid and our first electric-drive vehicle in 2010 with three additional models by 2013.

Does Chrysler have a viable plan? With our requested bridge loan – absolutely! I also believe that further partnership, restructuring and consolidation would make the U.S. auto industry even more viable and competitive in the long run. Further opportunities for technology sharing would provide fuel-efficient cars and trucks more cost effectively and faster to market. The three-company alliance that developed the dualmode hybrid is a good example. As a Country, we should not trade our current dependence on foreign oil for a future dependence on foreign technologies.

The final question is, when will Chrysler pay back this loan? We believe we will be well positioned to begin repayment of the federal loans — in 2012. I recognize that this is a significant amount of public money. However, we believe this is the least costly alternative considering the depth of the economic crisis and the options we face.

Chrysler, ZF Reach Axle Deal

Marysville, Mich., Nov 18, 2008 - Chrysler LLC and ZF Friedrichshafen AG today announced the formation of a new axle manufacturing alliance. The partnership will utilize Chrysler’s new Marysville (Mich.) Axle Plant to build three families of state-of-the-art axles for improved fuel efficiency.

“This partnership gives Chrysler access to advanced axle technologies from a partner that is a leading worldwide supplier of driveline and chassis technology,” said Chrysler LLC President and Vice Chairman Tom LaSorda. “Advanced axle technologies are key to our powertrain offensive, aimed at improving the fuel efficiency of our products. And working with a partner allows us to reduce development costs and capital investment requirements. In the end, it’s the customer who wins. These axles promise better mileage, better quality and better refinement.”

This program will consolidate the number of axles used on the Company’s vehicles for greater economies of scale. Included in the program is a family of front-wheel-drive axles and a family of rear-wheel-drive axles based on proprietary ZF designs and a Chrysler-designed rear-wheel-drive axle.

“This partnership with Chrysler and the UAW further demonstrates ZF’s intention to increase market presence with axles and to use this as a foundation for future explorations with additional customers,” said ZF CEO Hans-Georg Haerter. “It gives us the opportunity to bring a key piece of ZF driveline and chassis technology to a large volume of future North American vehicles with a skilled workforce in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.”

The Chrysler / ZF axle-making partnership, contingent on state and local incentives, ensures the retention of Chrysler employees and anticipates a phased changeover from current Detroit Axle-centered operations. The Marysville facility is currently under construction, on schedule, with a target production launch in early 2010. The 700,000 square-foot plant is expected to produce approximately 500,000 axles a year.

“This partnership will help retain a solid, long-term foundation for UAW workers employed in axle-making operations,” said UAW Vice President General Holiefield. “By partnering with ZF at the new Marysville Axle Plant, our employees may be able to take on additional work – which is good news for expanded employment opportunities.”

The creation of the Chrysler / ZF axle-making partnership will have no negative effect upon any product programs or their timing.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

As outlined in the Company’s Recovery and Transformation Plan, partnership opportunities are critical to Chrysler’s future success. These opportunities involve new markets, new segments, new potential alliance partners and new sources for components. Chrysler’s global strategy builds on the company’s historic strengths, including the ability to respond rapidly and creatively to emerging opportunities. Forging strategic alliances is a cornerstone of the strategy.

About Axles
The axle plays a major role in the chassis system as a supporting link between wheels and vehicle body. All forces and movements between wheel and vehicle structure are transmitted via the axle. The drive axle ensures that engine motive power reaches the wheels. The front axle also transmits steering movements to the wheels.

Regardless of their design, axles are mainly responsible for ensuring optimum tire use in all driving conditions.

Apart from function, weight, installation space and crash performance are further important aspects of axle system development.

About Chrysler LLC
Chrysler LLC, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Mich., produces Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge and Mopar® brand vehicles and products. Total sales worldwide in 2007 were 2.7 million vehicles. Sales outside of North America were the highest ever with an increase of 15 percent over 2006. In 2007, the Foundation gave approximately $21 million in charitable donations.

About ZF

Participation with "America Supports You" extends decades of Chrysler support to the military

Auburn Hills, Mich., Feb 26, 2008 - Chrysler LLC announces it will join America Supports You (ASY), a Department of Defense program connecting non-profit groups with military men and women and their families. The relationship with America Supports You continues Chrysler’s decades-long legacy of support for the military with its products and through morale-building activities.

"The mission of America Supports You merges perfectly with the legacy Chrysler has of supporting the military and their families for decades," said Bob Nardelli, Chrysler LLC Chairman and CEO. "Beginning with our Jeep® products carrying troops in World War II and continuing with our initiatives today, Chrysler has remained committed to the well-being of the men and women who wear the uniform and their families."

Chrysler recently announced a partnership with the Freedom Calls Foundation, an ASY homefront group. Its mission is to connect troops deployed in Iraq and their families in the United States through video conferencing. Chrysler has opened its video conferencing infrastructure at the Company's Auburn Hills, Mich., headquarters so families can schedule time to talk to their loved ones via video conferencing.

The company also supports ASY member Operation Gratitude in their mission to lift troop morale through the delivery of care packages filled with items from citizens in the U.S. More than 1,800 Jeep dealers across the country opened their dealerships and became "drop zones" for citizens to leave donation items that were then shipped to Operation Gratitude's headquarters in California. Included for the recipients of the 250,000th and 300,000th packages were the keys to brand new Jeep Libertys. Spc. Alfonso Sanchez received the 250,000th package and Spc. Michael Gallagher received the 300,000th package.

"We're so pleased to have Chrysler as part of America Supports You," says Allison Barber, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. "The company's commitment to support troops overseas and their families here at home highlights its long history of caring for our military members."

As troops transition out of military service, many are looking for career opportunities that provide growth, acceptable wages and stability. Working in conjunction with our 3,600 Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealers, Chrysler will soon begin offering military leaving the service the opportunity to be connected to one of our dealerships and considered for employment at a dealership location.

In its 83-year history, Chrysler has supported the military in many ways, including:

Production of Jeep vehicles that were the primary transportation of troops beginning prior to World War II (1940 - 1970)

Supplying Dodge products to the military

Supporting the war effort through production of Sherman tanks (1941)

Support of the annual Army-Navy football game

Vehicle purchase discount incentive of $500 on Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep products

Detroit, Jan 14, 2008 - Three passionate designs combine with three advanced propulsion systems. The result: high-tech, innovative vehicles with alternative fuel choices … and exciting design and brand character.

Chrysler LLC's mission to be more environmentally responsible is significantly changing how we envision vehicles in our future portfolio. As the entire automotive industry has basically the same technology pool from which to draw, our design challenge remains similar to what it has always been: How do we distinguish Chrysler's future designs from the rest of the pack? Even in this environment, we must create emotional designs, and must offer vehicles that people will really want to own and drive.

So we have challenged ourselves to unleash our design passion – in combination with these future technologies and linked to the Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge brands for our 2008 concept vehicles.

Each of the technologies must be transparent to our customers and provide an exceptional driving experience. In addition, each technology must be optimally packaged in the vehicle to ensure uncompromised comfort and function.

The Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge concept vehicles for 2008 take advantage of the unique packaging and design opportunities realized by these advanced powertrain systems.

The all-new Chrysler ecoVoyager concept, Jeep Renegade concept and Dodge ZEO concept take advantage of the best of new technologies and couple them with the room, comfort, speed and style customers will not sacrifice – allowing potential customers to still feel good about their personal impact on the environment even when simply having fun.

In designing each of the three concepts for the 2008 North American International Auto Show, Chrysler designers studied various emerging and growing customer groups to overlay their needs and expectations with Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brand values to develop the best overall fit. The result is an all-new passionate design concept for each of our three brands.

Auburn Hills, Mich., Jan 12, 2008 - Once again, Chrysler LLC's "family rooms on wheels" have been awarded highest honors. For the first time in the award's history, the all-new 2008 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan captured all of the votes for best minivans as awarded by the 2008 International Car of the Year Awards (ICOTY) jurors, leaving no room for third-place contenders. The 2008 Chrysler Town & Country earned first-place in two categories, International Truck of the Year and The Most Compatible Minivan of the Year. The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan earned second place in The Most Compatible Minivan of the Year category as well.

In addition, the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan "Rooms" television spot won The Heart String Award from the ICOTY jury for the most emotionally compelling car advertisement.

"We're honored to have earned the accolades of jurors on the ICOTY panel for our all-new minivans," said Deborah Meyer, Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer. "These awards serve as testimony to what customers have been telling us about the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, namely that they offer more innovation, functionality, value, safety and useful features than any other minivan in the market."

As the fifth generation of industry leading minivans, the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan are designed to be "family rooms on wheels," with each offering distinct advantages in the areas of safety, fuel economy, functionality and design.

Among the all-new minivans' 35 new or improved features are:

Three distinct seating systems that include the Swivel n' Go™ seat system, the Stow n' Go® seating system and a second- row bench seat with fold-in-the-floor third-row seat. Swivel n' Go offers second-row seats that swivel 180 degrees to face the third row with a removable table that installs between the two rows, covered storage bins in the second-row floor, third-row uncovered storage and fold-in-the-floor third-row seating

Standard safety equipment such as advanced multi-stage driver and low-risk deployment air bags, the all-row supplemental side-curtain air bags with added rollover protection and an electronic stability program with traction control and brake assist

Entertainment features including SIRIUS Backseat TV featuring three family friendly channels (Disney Channel, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon Mobile) and a dual DVD entertainment system that allows for different media to be played at the same time

Convenience features like the one-touch power third row folding seat and YES Essentials stain-resistant, odor-resistant and anti-static fabric seats, a premium front console that slides rearward 21 inches and 13 cup or bottle holders

A minivan-first six-speed transaxle available with 3.3-liter, 3.8-liter and 4.0-liter V-6 engines for more spirited driving performance

Chrysler LLC invented the modern minivan segment in 1983 and has been the innovation and sales leader in the segment ever since, selling more than 12 million minivans worldwide to date and pioneering more than 60 minivan or industry-first features.

The ICOTY awards are voted on by a panel representing a variety of automotive media. The ICOTY awards honor vehicles made in all countries around the world that are sold in North America. The awards are a salute to automakers and their teams for their success in connecting with consumers. J.D. Power tabulated the jury votes.

Five stars earned for frontal- and side-impact crash protection for Jeep® Liberty, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Nitro, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Pacifica and Chrysler Town & Country

Auburn Hills, Mich., Dec 7, 2007 - The 2008 Jeep® Liberty, 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2008 Dodge Nitro, 2008 Dodge Caliber, 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, 2008 Chrysler Pacifica and the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country received the U. S. government’s highest safety ratings for frontal- and side-impact crash protection from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“Through a broad range of engineering technologies, Chrysler is offering its customers the safety they expect and deserve,” said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President – Product Development, Chrysler LLC. “Both passive and active safety systems enhance the inherent stability and safety we design into all of our Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles.”

When it comes to safety, Chrysler employs a twofold approach: conventional features such as pretensioning and load-limiting seat belt retractors and supplemental air bags are combined with accident-avoidance features including improved steering, handling and braking.

2008 Jeep Liberty

The 2008 Jeep Liberty is equipped with 35 safety and security features including the company’s side-occupant protection system. The system includes supplemental side-curtain air bags with extended up time, tethers and multiple sensors in case of a rollover. Adding to the mid-size SUV’s long list of standard safety and security features are Electronic Stability Program, Electronic Roll Mitigation, anti-lock brake system, tire pressure monitoring (TPM), rain-sensing wipers and three new technologies: Trailer Sway Control, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers technologies such as electronic limited slip differentials and Electronic Stability Program that help to contribute to the vehicle’s on-road and off-road dynamics. Advanced multistage front and supplemental side curtain air bags, tire pressure monitoring system, ParkView™ Rear Back-up Camera (with or without navigation), ParkSense® Rear Park Assist System, SmartBeam® headlamps, high-intensity discharge headlamps and rain-sensing wipers offer the latest innovation in occupant protection, safety and security on the road. The Jeep Grand Cherokee also features three new safety and security technologies for 2008: Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control.

2008 Dodge Caliber

Reinforcing Chrysler’s commitment to safety and security, the 2008 Dodge Caliber gives customers an outstanding level of technology in the value-conscious compact car segment. More than 25 advanced safety technologies are available including standard supplemental side-curtain air bags, optional seat-mounted supplemental side air bags, standard driver and passenger front air bags, available Electronic Stability Program and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

2008 Dodge Nitro

The 2008 Dodge Nitro offers a full range of active and passive safety systems. Among the vehicle’s standard equipment is the advanced electronic chassis controls — Electronic Stability Program, Electronic Roll Mitigation, All-speed Traction Control, brake assist and advanced anti-lock brakes.

2008 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan

The all-new 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans are equipped with many standard safety and security items such as advanced, multi-stage driver and passenger air bags; all-row supplemental side-curtain air bags with added rollover protection; driver and front-passenger knee blockers; Electronic Stability Program with traction control and brake assist; a patented energy-absorbing steering column and three Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) child seat anchors. The new minivans also feature an Enhanced Accident Response System. This system switches on the interior lamps, unlocks doors, turns on hazard-flasher exterior lamps and turns the engine off by cutting off fuel in the event an impact causes air bag deployment. Other safety and security features include a rearview interior conversation mirror; power-adjustable pedals; remote, keyless, illuminated entry; power sliding passenger doors; power liftgate; tire pressure monitoring system; ParkSense® rear back-up assist system and ParkView® rear back-up camera.

Chrysler Service Contracts’ decision to partner with Merchants Information Solutions and enter the emerging identity theft marketplace is in response to the numerous identity theft service providers offering assisted and/or partial solutions — that fall short of providing a comprehensive identity theft program. The Merchants Information Solutions strategy that supports the SmartIDentity program “shows a commitment by Chrysler Service Contracts to offer its extended warranty customers one of the leading and most comprehensive managed recovery programs in the United States today,” stated Jerry Klesko, Product Manager for Chrysler Service Contracts.

The comprehensive identity theft program solution being offered by Merchants Information Solutions “focuses on helping Chrysler Service Contracts increase sales while helping improve customer retention for its auto dealer business clients,” said Klesko. “This is another cutting edge and quality product that provides an important and timely value for our clients and their customers” said Walt Foraker, Field Operations Manager for Chrysler Service Contracts.

“We are excited to bring the Merchants Information Solutions SmartIDentity program to Chrysler Service Contracts” said Russ Johnson, President of Merchants Information Solutions. The Merchants identity theft program — called SmartIDentity responds to financial and non-financial identity theft related events. According to the FTC, 41 percent of identity theft is related to a financial instrument (including credit/debit cards, checking/savings accounts, loans, etc.). This means that 59 percent of identity theft is non-financial including fraudulent use of medical/heath insurance, driver’s license information, tax information, employee ID number, student ID number, financial aid, etc.

Mark Pribish, National Director of Sales for Merchants Identity Theft Management Services stated “that while MIS introduced its business to business identity theft program solution in January of 2006, Merchants has helped resolve over 29,000 cases of fraud — including medical fraud, public records fraud, identity theft fraud and credit card fraud — since 1990 on an individual consumer basis.” According to Pribish, “Merchants is unique in providing professionally trained recovery advocates who are licensed as Private Investigators as well as Federal Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and Fair and Accurate Transaction Act (FACTA) certified — who will handle an identity theft victim’s case from beginning to end — until it is brought to final resolution.”

Credit Crunch Still Hurting Car Sales

A deteriorating U.S. economy combined with an ongoing credit crunch is darkening the credit outlook for the auto finance market well into 2009, said Moody’s Investors Service in a report on Tuesday.

“The sector is clearly under severe stress,” said Curt Beaudouin, vice president and analyst at Moody’s. He noted increasing delinquencies and write-downs of uncollectable debt, higher loss severities due to slumping used-car prices, as well as shrinking new vehicle sales.

The auto finance industry, which includes banks, independent finance companies and automaker-owned finance units or captives, has also been hurt by higher funding costs due to the credit crunch and depressed profitability due to greater auto loss provisions, he said.

The analyst said participating banks are less vulnerable to these mounting risks, and their auto lending is not a leading negative ratings driver.

“For none of these banks, however, is auto finance exposure a leading negative rating driver. They possess more diversified asset and earnings bases and are not tied to the manufacturers,” said Beaudouin.

Still, he said, auto finance will remain a difficult market for the banks. Their profit and/or asset quality potential will always be subordinated to the behavior of the captives, which they can’t control.
“Banks would like to exit the market, but there are no willing buyers for their auto operations. So, banks are withdrawing from the business by slowing originations and winding down portfolios,” said Beaudouin.

“The captives are — and will continue to be — more vulnerable to aggressive financing practices influenced by manufacturer sales targets; they are further weighed down by their monoline nature and heavy business concentrations with their troubled manufacturer affiliates,” said Beaudouin.

The same basic picture applies to the independent auto finance firms, he said.

“Their monoline (heavily subprime) nature and severely impaired wholesale funding model have caused retrenchment in the shrinking universe of independent auto finance companies,” said Beaudouin, “and this trend is expected to continue.”

Those exposures must now be worked through, he said.

“Buyers have simply bought too much vehicle, thereby increasing their debt burden,” said Beaudouin. “Auto lenders were enablers in this process, by offering increasingly aggressive financing terms and exposing themselves to increased severity of loss, in a phenomenon we refer to as ‘the trade-in treadmill,” said the analyst.

In addition, he said, the ongoing credit crunch, in place since the summer of 2007, has been hurting the cost and availability of funding for auto finance companies, while deteriorating economic conditions are taking a toll on the consumers, the used car market and new vehicles sales.

Merger talks between two auto giants have reportedly reached an impasse and will be placed on temporary hold until after the U.S. presidential elections today.

Last week the Bush administration decided the government would not help finance a merger of GM and Chrysler. Both vehicle makers were seeking $10 billion-$15 billion in government to make the agreement happen.

It’s likely the companies want to see how a new regime in the White House responds to their pleas.

In the meantime, Cerberus Capital Management LP — the private equity firm that owns the majority of Chrysler — will reopen talks with other potential suitors interested in acquiring the floundering automaker.

The Big Three automakers have been lobbying for some form of government aid since the government announced a $700 billion package to rescue financial markets from the current economic crisis.

According to industry analysts, if a merger between GM and Chrysler were to take place, the former would keep only a small fraction of Chrysler’s model lineup.

Up to 14 assembly plants in North America could close as well, putting struggling parts suppliers and others in the supply chain at even bigger risk
Chrysler recently kicked off their “Protection with Direction” promotion, where they will give you a free Garmin nuvi 255W GPS navigation unit - a $350 unit - for free.

Here’s how it works..

With the purchase of any Chrysler extended warranty with a base MSRP over $1,000 between October 16, 2008 to December 31, 2008 you will get the garmin unit tossed into the deal for no additional cost. Dont’ get nervous at that price just yet though!

Now, here’s a great way to take advantage of this:

Let’s say you recently purchased a used 12 month old Chrysler 300. Now, you were interested in getting the extended warranty, but the particular one you wanted was being offered to you for $1,599. So, you decided to pass on it.

Well, the best bet to get a great price on your Chrysler extended warranty is to go to GenuineChryslerWarranty.com and submit a quote request. Viola - they come back offering you that same extended warranty for $590. Not bad - we just saved over $1000.

Next, we take them up on their interest free financing.

So you put the required 10% down payment on your extended warranty, which comes out to $59. Within a few days you have your actual factory backed extended warranty in place on your cool Chrysler 300, as well as a new $350 Garmin GPS!

You can now flip the GPS on eBay or craigslist if you are so inclined, keep it for yourself, or my favorite:

re-gift it for Christmas

Chrysler Pulling Plug on Hybrid SUV’s

Chrysler LLC will stop producing its first two hybrid-electric vehicles slightly more than two months after they started arriving in at your local Dodge & Chrysler dealerships.

This summer, Chrysler introduced the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango Hemi hybrid SUVs to great fanfare. Production began in August. But the two were doomed to a short lifespan from the beginning. They are made at Chrysler’s Newark, Delaware plant, originally scheduled to close at the end of 2009.

But slow full-sized SUV sales pushed Chrysler to move the closing up a year. The company announced last week it will close Newark at the end of this year. Chrysler has no plans to produce the hybrid SUVs elsewhere, said spokesman Todd Goyer.

“Keeping the plant open for the hybrid versions isn’t a sound business decision,” he said.

Chrysler is concentrating on the hybrid version of the Dodge Ram pickup, which is due in 2010, Goyer said. “There are more hybrids coming.”

The Newark plant employs 1,000 workers on one shift and had been targeted for closing under Chrysler’s Recovery and Transformation Plan, introduced in 2007 when Chrysler was part of DaimlerChrysler.

The hybrid powertrains Chrysler used were developed at the Hybrid Development Center in suburban Detroit, a joint engineering project with Chrysler, General Motors, BMW and Daimler AG.

Chrysler minivans are the most awarded with more than 260 accolades

Auburn Hills, Mich., Sep 25, 2008 - The year was 1983. Ronald Reagan was President of the United States of America. Lech Walesa was the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. The Internet was created, and the first mobile phones were introduced to the public. U.S. astronauts completed the first space shuttle spacewalk; Michael Jackson performed the “moonwalk.” The Baltimore Orioles won the World Series…and Chrysler hit a home run with the introduction of the first minivan.

The Chrysler Corporation (as it was known then) was first to market with the minivan in 1983. However, the development of the minivan began even earlier than that, in 1977, as a response to new customer needs identified in the marketplace.

In the late 1970s, U.S. “baby boomers” were starting families in large numbers and were looking for an economical alternative to automotive transportation. Traditional sedans and wagons continued to get smaller due to pollution and fuel economy concerns, and full-sized vans were being customized as passenger vehicles–but the combination of poor ride comfort, large size and rear-wheel-drive design did not make them ideal for family hauling. Chrysler designers and engineers understood the shortcomings of the full-sized van and began early development studies on a vehicle that would fulfill the needs of new families. Chrysler pinpointed a potential vehicle market that needed to deliver a few simple premises: fuel-efficient, easy to step into, family friendly and smaller than the Dodge Ram Van.

After numerous concepts and proposals, Chrysler product planners unanimously agreed on a platform theme that utilized a flat-load floor with the entire powertrain in front of the passenger compartment. Utilizing a front-engine, front-wheel-drive chassis design, Chrysler engineers created a platform with chair-high command-of-the-road seating that provided easy entry and exit. A rear-wheel-drive chassis design would have required a taller floor design, or a center-raised tunnel traveling the length of the vehicle to provide drivetrain clearance. Chrysler engineers also determined that a rear-wheel-drive design would require owners to climb up into the vehicle, rather than conveniently step into it.

With the new family vehicle design theme locked into a front-wheel-drive layout, Chrysler’s new “magic wagon” program faced uncertainty with tough U.S. economic conditions. It was not until the federal Chrysler Loan Guarantee Board approved $1.5 billion (U.S.) for future product programs in 1980 that Chrysler had the funding to move forward.

With new capital to invest, and an economical program budget of $660 million, all bets were on the production of the magic wagon. The program was a “go,” receiving its official internal chassis program designation of “T-115.” Chairman Lee A. Iacocca and soon-to-be President Harold “Hal” K. Sperlich quickly led development of the magic wagon–a “mini-van”–along with a revamping of the Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, to produce the upcoming family hauler.

On November 2, 1983, the first minivan rolled down the assembly line in Windsor. These 1984 model-year Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager models quickly appeared in dealerships throughout the U.S. alongside the Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant K-cars. Chrysler’s limited technical and financial resources forced the Company to focus its marketing and support efforts on K-cars, but Dodge and Plymouth minivans were the products ultimately attracting consumers into dealerships.

The launch of the minivan in 1983 created an all-new product segment. Observed top U.S. automotive magazine Road & Track, “Chrysler is betting there’s a big market for a van of this size and is aiming it at current station wagon owners; those who already own larger, less efficient club wagons; growing families; those who need station wagons but hate the stodgy suburban image; women who aren’t comfortable driving large conventional vans; people who used to own full-sized sedans and like plenty of interior room, and those who just enjoy the sheer novelty of the vehicle.”

The Company’s bet was well placed. Chrysler’s minivans were an instant success.

As the minivan became a cultural icon throughout North America in the 1980s, its introduction to the international markets helped establish and solidify the Chrysler brand worldwide. It was in 1987 that Chrysler’s new minivan, also known as the MPV, or multi-purpose vehicle, began sales in Europe.

Diesel-powered minivans were introduced in 1993, aimed at further strengthening the presence of Chrysler minivans in Europe. In 1996, the Company offered right-hand-drive versions, opening up sales opportunities in markets such as the UK, Japan, Australia and South Africa.

In keeping with the original premise of fuel efficiency, a new world record for fuel economy was set in 2000 by a Chrysler Voyager SE powered by its available 2.5-liter common-rail turbo diesel (CRD) engine. The Voyager traveled 1,724 kilometers (1,077 miles) on a single tank of diesel fuel – a first for a minivan.

The newest fifth-generation minivans–Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler Grand Voyager and Dodge Grand Caravan–encapsulate more than 65 minivan-first features and more than 25 years of development in minivan leadership. As the leader in family transportation, Chrysler and Dodge minivans take the “family room on wheels” concept to a new level.

The legacy of innovation will continue to be a priority for Chrysler and Dodge minivans going forward. With more than 12 million minivans sold worldwide and over 260 awards–including 2008 “Minivan of the Year” and “International Truck of the Year” by the International Car of the Year organization–Chrysler and Dodge minivans are continuing to make history.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Actions speak louder than words.

Chrysler LLC announced today that the Company and its ENVI organization have new production-intent, advanced electric-drive technology packaged in three different vehicles – one for each of its brands, Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge.

Chrysler will select one electric-drive model to be produced in 2010 for consumers in North American markets, and European markets after 2010. Additionally, approximately one hundred Chrysler electric vehicles will be on the road in government, business, utility and Chrysler development fleets in 2009.

The Company said that it is well into the development of advanced, production-intent electric vehicles, and that it will apply electric-drive technology to its front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and body-on-frame four-wheel-drive platforms in the next several years.

At its World Headquarters here today, Chrysler revealed its electric-drive prototypes – Dodge EV, Jeep EV and Chrysler EV – and demonstrated the driving performance and capability of each.

“We have a social responsibility to our consumers to deliver environmentally friendly, fuel efficient, advanced electric vehicles, and our intention is to meet that responsibility quickly and more broadly than any other automobile manufacturer,” said Bob Nardelli, Chairman and CEO – Chrysler LLC. “The introduction of the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge electric vehicles provides a glimpse of the very near future, and demonstrates that we are serious and well along in the development of bringing electric vehicles to market.”

ENVI Organization

The development of Chrysler’s Electric Vehicles and Range-extended Electric Vehicles is led by ENVI – representing the first four letters of “environmental” – the Company’s in-house organization that was formed to focus on electric-drive production vehicles and related advanced technologies. The development of electric-drive systems for future Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles is maturing quickly.

“ENVI was created just over one year ago with the strategic intent to develop electric-drive vehicles quickly for Chrysler, and it is surpassing expectations,” said Tom LaSorda – Vice Chairman and President. “With ENVI, Chrysler is developing technology to bring Electric Vehicles and extremely fuel-efficient Range-extended Electric Vehicles to market.”

Electric Vehicle Technology

Chrysler’s Electric Vehicles utilize just three primary components. These include an electric motor to drive the wheels, an advanced lithium-ion battery system to power the electric-drive motor, and a controller that manages energy flow. The electric-drive system is being developed for front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, and body-on-frame four-wheel-drive vehicle applications.

“This technology provides customers with a vehicle that has zero tailpipe emissions and a 150 to 200 mile driving range – far exceeding most Americans’ daily commutes, as nearly 80 percent of Americans drive less than 40 miles per day, or 14,000 miles per year,” said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President – Product Development. “Electric Vehicles provide the opportunity to fulfill social responsibility, reduce dependency on foreign oil, and eliminate monthly gasoline bills, while delivering performance and utility that our customers desire.”

Range-extended Electric Vehicle Technology

The Range-extended Electric Vehicle combines the electric-drive components of the Electric Vehicle with a small gasoline engine and integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. This provides the positive attributes of an Electric Vehicle with the driving range equivalent to today’s gasoline-powered vehicles – with no compromises in performance.

Range-extended Electric Vehicles offer environmental responsibility without giving up driving range, comfort or utility.

Dodge EV

The Dodge EV development Electric Vehicle is a two-passenger rear-wheel-drive sports car that marries high performance with zero tailpipe emissions.

“The Dodge EV sets a new standard for what can be expected in electric-drive vehicles,” said Lou Rhodes, Vice President – Advance Vehicle Engineering, and President – ENVI. “The electric-vehicle technology enables a fun-to-drive performance sports car and helps redefine the vision of an environmentally responsible vehicle for the Dodge brand.”

The electric-drive system consists of three primary components: a 200 kW (268 horsepower) electric motor, an advanced lithium-ion battery and an integrated power controller.

The 200 kW electric-drive motor generates 650 N*m (480 lb.-ft.) of torque. The instant high torque of the electric-drive motor delivers outstanding performance, accelerating the Dodge EV to 60 mph in less than five seconds, with quarter-mile times of 13 seconds. The Dodge EV has a top speed of more than 120 mph.

Working with the latest advanced lithium-ion battery technology, the Dodge EV has a continuous driving range of 150 to 200 miles, based on advancement of new battery technology – more than triple the average daily commute of most consumers. Recharging the vehicle is a simple one-step process: plugging into a standard 110-volt household outlet for eight hours. The recharge time can be cut in half to four hours by using a typical 220-volt household appliance power outlet.

The Dodge EV offers driving enthusiasts a performance sports car that can be driven to work every day – without consuming gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions.

Jeep EV

The Jeep EV development vehicle is a Range-extended Electric Vehicle that provides a glimpse into the future of a “Go Anywhere, Do Anything” vehicle with renowned Jeep Wrangler capability.

The Jeep EV combines Wrangler’s unmatched off-road capability with the ultimate “Tread Lightly” mindset by providing nature ambassadors with the ability to roam the planet and take care of it at the same time.

The Jeep EV Range-extended Electric Vehicle uses an electric motor, an advanced lithium-ion battery system, and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. The 200 kW (268 horsepower) electric motor generates 400 N*m (295 lb.-ft.) of torque. With approximately eight gallons of gasoline, the Jeep EV has a range of 400 miles, including 40 miles of zero fuel-consumption, zero-emissions, all-electric operation.

“We are also exploring four-wheel-drive, in-wheel electric motors to demonstrate the full reach of ENVI’s advanced electric-drive technologies,” said Rhodes.

The instant high torque of the electric-drive motor and the ability to precisely control each wheel independently results in off-road capability ideally suited for the Jeep brand, without compromising on-road driving capability.

Chrysler EV

The Chrysler EV development vehicle is a Range-extended Electric Vehicle that demonstrates another possible application of ENVI electric-drive technology in the segment-leading Chrysler Town & Country minivan.

“With the Chrysler EV, we are able to blend seven-passenger capability and the luxury of the Chrysler Town & Country minivan with electric-drive technology, demonstrating family practicality with zero compromise,” said Rhodes. “ENVI’s electric-drive development vehicles showcase our accelerated application of electric-drive systems into a wide range of vehicles in Chrysler’s future product portfolio.”

The Chrysler EV combines the electric-drive components of an Electric Vehicle with an integrated small-displacement engine and generator to produce additional electricity to power the electric-drive system when needed. This provides all of the positive attributes of an Electric Vehicle and extends the driving range to be equivalent to today’s gasoline-powered vehicles – without compromises.

The Chrysler EV uses a 190 kW (255 horsepower) motor, producing 350 N*m (258 lb.-ft.) of torque, providing 0 to 60 mph acceleration in approximately nine seconds. The Chrysler EV Range-extended Electric Vehicle can drive 40 miles on all-electric power, and boasts a range of 400 miles on approximately eight gallons of gasoline. This makes the Chrysler EV the perfect fuel-efficient family vehicle.

The knowledge and experience gained from the Chrysler EV will be applied to other front-wheel-drive applications in Chrysler’s portfolio.

Chrysler LLC Electric-vehicle Consumer Web Site

Chrysler LLC has launched a web site – www.Chryslergoeselectric.com – to allow consumers to view the latest updates on Electric Vehicles and Range-extended Electric Vehicles from the Company. Content will include videos, photography and news, and visitors can sign up for updates. In addition, the site features a blog where consumers can interact directly with the Company.

Department of Energy Cooperative Agreement

Chrysler and General Electric are jointly pursuing a project with the United States Department of Energy to explore advanced energy-storage technology.

“Chrysler’s partnership with General Electric combines the electric-drive technology demonstrated in the Chrysler Electric Vehicles, with GE’s research and development of advanced energy storage systems,” said Klegon. “Our collective goal working with the DOE is to develop a new, integrated energy-storage system to make electric vehicle battery packs smaller and significantly less expensive than current designs.”

Chrysler and GE will develop and evaluate dual-battery solutions based on GE’s unique technology.

“One of the challenges with electric vehicles is finding a battery with the correct balance between power – for example, during vehicle acceleration – and energy for long driving range,” said Klegon. “We believe that combining two unique battery chemistries – one biased toward power and the other toward energy – into a single battery pack is very promising for a future Chrysler Electric Vehicle.”
